The Steppenwolf Theatre Company began its first performances in the basement of a Highland Park church. Three friends grew to forty-three cast members that have been keeping up Steppenwolf Theatre Company's prestigious reputation for close to 40 years. With an average of 16 plays and 700 performances a year, Steppenwolf brings in the crowds; all eager to see what has made this small, neighborhood theatre so famous. The productions are top-quality, with previous shows such as Grapes of Wrath and August: Osage County, which has won 5 Tony Award including best play and best leading actress. The theatre is intimate, so there is really not a bad seat in the house and the stage is in the center between two sections of the audience. There are great restaurants for your pre-show experience in Lincoln Park, including Pequod's, where you can crab a slice of Chicago's famous deep-dish pizza.
