In 1893, the Columbian Museum of Chicago opened with the intention of teaching the public to learn about and preserve art, archaeology, science and history. In 1905, the museum changed its name to the Field Museum of Natural history. With a new name but the same mission, the Museum's exhibitions combine natural history, pop culture, art and modern science to create a comprehensive view of the world. Permanent collections include Inside Ancient Egypt, a look into one of the nation's largest mummy collections, and Underground Adventure, where people of all ages can shrink down to the size of a bug and view the world through a different, smaller scope. The Field Museum also plays host to traveling exhibitions, such as one that explores the history of chocolate across different cultures.
